Outside In

Steven Johnson has just launched his first major web site project since his classic involvments in Feed and Plastic several years ago. He describes outside.in as being designed to provide "a bridge between information space and real-world space -- a place to see in a single glance all the interesting things that are happening around you". In short, this is an exercise in building the "geographic web".

Stripped back to the most basic user principle, you key in a US zip code or neighbourhood name/descriptr -- outside.in is currently confined to the US -- and get taken to contributions made to the site corresponding to your chosen locale. The main tools for using are described here, along with guidelines for contributing.

Johnson describes the project in recent postings on his blog.
